PUBLIC TRANPORTATION

There are two city bus systems in Canada’s Capital Region. OC Transpo (613-741-4390) operates in the Ontario side of the Ottawa River and the Société de Transport de l’Outaouais (819-770-3242) operates on the Québec side. You can transfer between these systems along Rideau and Wellington Streets in Ottawa and around the Place d’accueil on Maisonneuve Boulevard in Gatineau. Both agencies offer convenient trip planning tools on their websites. The ticket usually cost 3.55 CAD in cash and less with a PRESTO.

TIPPING

Gratuities are seldom included in Canadian restaurants. It is customary to tip approximately 15-20% on the total bill before tax, 5-10% for poor service, 25% for exceptional service. It is also a good idea to tip in hotels. Tipping is also customary for other service providers such as hairdressers, manicurists, aestheticians and taxi drivers. In these cases the percentage of tip is really up to the individual, but 10% minimum is common.
